TECHARU! Tech/geek talk

Post by Marc on Wed Jul 16, 2008 5:27 pm

So, I'm down to like 400 mb on one hard drive and 200 mb on the other. I need an external hard drive, and fast. Suggestions/avoisions?

could you buy a new internal hard drive, i.e. upgrade?

I'd totally just buy a new external one, probably cheaper, I assume.

As far as I'm aware Seagate and Western Digital used to be the bigs guns when it came to Drives. But that may have changed, or maybe never was so. I think you can't go wrong with either of them. Personally I'm a Seagate fan...yep.

I don't think I can upgrade, because there's very limited slots in the laptop. Hopefully it's not too much of a hassle to carry; I want one that's nice and durable so that I can just stick it in with my other laptop stuff.

Seagate is probably what I was going to look at, unless Simmo or someone tells me otherwise.

I just found out that you can get 'portable' external drives and 'desktop' external drives. So the portable ones are, presumably, not too difficult to carry, and for that purpose. The largest seems to be around 250 GB.

Hmm, i was just looking at some of the specifications of one and said its weight was 184kg... I think that's a typo.

This is obviously only one place, but I got some of my stuff from them. They seem pretty on the ball.

UPDATE:
Yeah it appears there's ones bigger than 250... but anyways the Western Digital ones look hella SeXay. As do the Seagate ones.

Yeah I was just looking through those. Seagate don't seem to support Firewire though, just USB.

Simmooooo! Is Firewire necessary for a harddrive that I'm just going to put music on?
If not, I'm just gonna get this bad boy:

Seagate FreeAgent 120 gig

edit: Well, it says: USB 2.0 (480Mbps), which is slightly faster than 1394a Firewire, which is what I have, I think.

What would you want Firewire for exclusively over USB? You got no USB ports spare? Does your laptop have a firewire port? I don't know anything about the specific differences but I though they were just alternative methods of data transfer? With maybe firewire potentially being faster?

Yeah, it turns out it's not such a big deal. I do have a firewire port, but I have 4 USB ports. I'm just gonna get that seagate one I posted.

And if these guys steal my credit card, it's your fault.

Hmm, I didn't use credit card.

Also, have you done it yet? Cause this other place has same one, maybe bigger for roughly same price?

Already did it.

Hey, it doesn't matter if YOU didn't...you recommended me to these guys, so if they rip me off, it's your fault...(this feels like a deleted Seinfeld episode).

You already did it? Jesus. You are like... the impulse king. Did you buy another dog while you were at it? Is your heart beating at a million miles a minute?

Yeah, deleted, I wonder why? Nah, just kidding, we should totally write some sit-com; I could do with lots of money.

ADD on: Also, it seems that $90 is pretty much the cheapest you'll find it, at least it is according to one of those internet shop search dealies. So... nice.

I'm enjoying my life too much to care!

I've been wanting to get one for a while, and Windows gave me the ole "You're running out of space" today, so I was all, "Not even." And here we are.

Yeah, I hate when windows gives that message. But then I went and deleted the 20+ gigs of useless crap I had on my Harddisk. Different methods for different people really. Nah, that's cool, you got your music and stuff.
