Controversy Now!

Post by Andrew.C on Tue Oct 07, 2008 12:59 pm

We’re on to the next episode of “So You Think That’s a Controversy?! Check Me Out!” With the last episode featuring euthanasia, which brought some good discussion, I think. Now, stay tuned, because right after the break (I promise) we open with The Abortion debate.

Sorry, I got carried away; I probably shouldn’t make of light of it like that, it’s just that it has been in the news so I feel it our duty to open up the floor of the Gentlemen’s Club and discuss!

This happened a couple of weeks ago:

“DOCTORS have been ordered to perform an abortion on a 12-year-old Queensland girl who is 18 weeks pregnant after a suspected rape.”
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24409341-5013945,00.html

And then this is happening now:

“MPs in the Legislative Council will begin debating the Abortion Law Reform Bill on Tuesday afternoon after it passed through the lower house unamended last month.
The bill will remove abortion from the Crimes Act, giving women unfettered access to terminations up to 24 weeks.”
http://news.smh.com.au/national/brumby-confident-abortion-bill-will-pass-20081007-4v65.html

The floor is yours...

I am going to sit this one out. I have no strong feelings either way and I 'discussed' this in philosophy for not one, not two, not three but 7 weeks straight at uni. Everything that could be said was said and we didn't get a good argument either way.

I will, however, draw your attention to an analagy that i thought was kinda cool. Its pro-choice but very well laid out. Look it up (I couldn't be bothered) - its about someone who is waylaid in an alley (or something) and wakes up attached to someone. That someone is like a violinist or something and you have to be attached to them for 9 months to keep them alive... it goes on and on about the ramifications etc and is really well written.

This is Tom, Signing out, never to return to this thread.

None of this is controversial and if you are opposed to any of it you are a terrible person on the same level as Tony Abbot

That was the greatest shut-down ever.

Just to try and provoke Tom further:

I was just curious about this, because the euthanasia discussion you were quite involved in (which is cool)... and, you don't see any similarities with these two topics? Such as the sanctity of life, or something?

So what you're saying is... that you could have an argument between yourself. And we could just watch! Sweet.

Do you really want me to argue myself, because seriously when he gets going the other me just doesn't shut up.
