Because they think it's attractive. It's hardly rocket surgery.

So people are dumb enough that they'll do something harmful (Sun tanning)/ ridiculous (spray tanning)/ no completely safe (pill tanning) just so they look cool to other people who are just as dumb?

not really, i find tan's look better and more healthy than non-tans. I also try to get tans. Do you do your hair? Do you wear hats? Do you buy nice looking shirts? Why when you can buy cheaper shittier looking shirts? Because looking good is good.

And no, with the exception of seeking the perfect hat (comfort wise) i spend very little (time and $) on my appearance.

I am with you glen, however that doesn't mean i don't understand the wish to look good, i also don't think that the wish is unfounded and devalued.
