Tug of war?! Awesome!

Post by Andrew.C on Wed Aug 20, 2008 7:16 pm

I hear that Baseball and Softball have been kicked out of the 2012 olympic games.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/summer/2006-02-09-london-baseball-softball-vote_x.htm

Some people have speculated that it’s because – at least for the softball – of America’s dominance. I don’t know if that’s true, but here’s a section I copied from Wikipedia about the last Olympics grand final game where Australia got silver.

“In one of the most dominating runs in softball history, the United States team led by head coach Mike Candrea won the gold medal by defeating Australia 5-1 in the championship game on August 23. It was the first time in 9 games that an opponent scored a run against Team USA.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softball_at_the_2004_Summer_Olympics

Also, on another note, I read that there is a maximum of 28 ‘sports’ (‘sports’ referring more to fields/categories such as “Athletics”) allowed in the Olympics, and when baseball and softball were voted out they weren’t replaced by anything. My vote would be Futsal. That would be cool. And it seems that these two sports are the only sports that have been eliminated since after 1936 when Polo was eliminated (hey, Polo has been in the Olympics).

And on that note, here’s a link to the Wikipedia listing of the funky sports that have been in the Olympics but aren’t no more. It’s about half way down, after the regular sports.

I say cut spectator sports out of the Olympics completely. They don't belong.
It should just be track and field, running and swimming.
I'll also allow archery and to a lesser extent, shooting. I've got my reasons, shut up all of you.

I have been drinking, but I agree with Andy that, Futsal should be included.
Also, I may have dreamed/hallucinated a "Team Floor" gymnastics event that was absolutely fantastic.

"Team Floor"?? Wow, that would be Karazy-up-in-here. Was it mixed sexes? With the possible chance that the "team" may or may not break out into some freakay orgy on the mat? Because if it did then yes you definitely dreamed it. But you should still suggest it to the IOC.

No orgy unfortunately but it was definitely not Cirque du Soleil. there was also some other event last night that seemed to be some a cross between the floor and the vault, kinda.

The was a narrow strip of the springy floor stuff that the gymnasts awesomed their way down which ended with them busting out a rad move off a trampampopoline.

I like the events like the pentathlon and the triathlon. A range of skills and not just focusing on one thing.

Holy shit! Really?! I've never seen or heard of that one. Sounds awesome. Are you sure this isn't some fony foxtel spoof olympics? Were the competitors dressed in large animal/character costumes? And did they do some awesome dunk with a basketball at the end of their routine?
