You're doing it wrong!

So I’m sure you all know about the "You’re doing it wrong" pictures, and I got reminded of them the other day when I re-heard a little factoid while watching Catalyst. They were talking about that Giant Squid dissection thing and one of the ‘scientist’ dudes was talking about the squid’s bizarre anatomy, specifically in that its esophagus passes through its brain! So if it ate a piece of food that was too large then it would split its brain open (fortunately the squid isn’t capable of doing that... but still!) And it just conjured up in my mind a Larson style comic frame in which a bumbling style God ineptly tries to piece together some animals while trying to decipher the French instructions, or something, with the caption of ‘You’re doing it wrong!’ And it made me laugh.

So this can be a thread for those animal factoids, or others, that you’ve heard which make you think ‘it shouldn’t be like that!’

Anyways, how bout this. I've been told that there’s a specific part of the brain that you can damage that robs you of the ability to see motion! So you kinda see everything in static frames. That is stoopid. If I built the brain, that area would not be there... or at least, it would be unbreakable.

You need to re-design the brain and I need to not try and reason/type when I am plastered. I dun well good so fah!

I’m sick of seeing how sucky the brain is at doing seemingly basic things. Check this 5 min clip about “Change Blindness.” Freaken crap-ass brain.

'Tis an unfortunate, yet undoubtedly amazing, fact that, glancing back over evolutionary history, we see that the lungs were initially only an infolded sack off the main line of the gastrointestinal tract. This allowed early fish, in addition to their gills for breathing in water, to gulp and swallow mouthfuls of air for valuable sojourns out on dry land. Quite a neat trick. But that is all it should ever have stayed, in my opinion.

But evolution never stops to think, never goes back to the drawing board, never admits a mistake. And instead of trying to create a new and entirely separate lung, dedicated to breathing and only breathing, it thought “no, wait a sec, I can make something of this, I know I can! Just give me a sec!” And so it blindly tinkered and tweaked away at something that was really just an added bonus, an afterthought, something that, let’s face it, wasn’t very great to begin with. And the old proverb “you can only polish a turd so much” would prove to be nowhere else more true. But, perhaps in spite of the cautionary proverb, evolution said "to hell with you! I'll make my own damn animal."

And the legacy of evolution’s puerile attitude and ham-fisted abilities that we are left with today is the stupid, stupid system where our food hole and air hole compete for the one path! And either one’s victory over the other will ensure a swift and most distressing (yet always hilarious) death to the poor schmuck who owns them. Yet it could have been otherwise. Just imagine being able to talk and drink at the same time! What glory! And not choke and splutter as your brain drops the ball and forgets what’s happening and tells you to take a breath whilst your mouth is still full of cereal like I did this morning. Curse you evolution!
